About the Author
Hi! I'm a Tokyo-based urban explorer who enjoys walking the hidden paths of the city.
I was born and raised in Tokyo, and it's been over 50 years now.
I was born in Shinjuku, and aside from a few years away, I've spent most of my life in Tokyo.
These days, I live in a quiet area near Haneda International Airport.
At the age of 29, I was transferred to Dallas, TX for a year and a half, and later, I lived in Fukuoka for five years in my 40s. But Tokyo has always been home.
Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved riding my bicycle through the streets of the city.
I often rode out to places like Nakano, Ikebukuro, and Shinjuku — always choosing unfamiliar routes on purpose, just to see what I’d discover.
That’s when I started to find those narrow, winding paths hidden quietly between buildings.
I didn’t know it back then, but many of those mysterious paths were actually ankyo — covered rivers.
And that was my first encounter with them.
This blog, Ankyo: Tokyo’s Hidden Waterways, is a personal project where I document the quiet beauty of Tokyo’s forgotten rivers.
Since I write this blog while working full-time, I can only update it about once or twice a month.
But each post is written with care, and I hope it brings a quiet joy to those who read it.
One more small excuse, if I may.
There's another purpose for this blog too—it’s a way for me to practice my English.
I'm still learning, so writing in English can be a bit challenging at times.
I try my best to make my writing sound natural, often using AI tools for a little extra help.
If you notice any awkward phrasing, please bear with me as I continue to improve.
🌿 I love:
- Exploring peaceful neighborhoods
- Discovering local history through landscapes
- Tracing the remains of old railways
- Fishing in mountain streams
- Tokyo Yakult Swallows
